New Life for an Older Netbook
Thursday, December 10, 2009

One of the reasons that led me to replacing my Asus Eee PC 901 XP netbook for a newer model was because I was running out of hard drive space as Windows XP with all of its updates, kept on using up all the space of the minute 4GB SSD drive.

It reached a point where the whole device was unusable as kept asking to update and hitting an "out of space" error. Many times it would install updates halfway and get stuck as the system didn't have enough room to unpack the downloaded files.

For months, the netbook sat unused on my shelf. It wasn't until a few days ago that I decided to do something about it. I did some heavy on-line research and discovered that I could either reinstall a stream-lined version of WinXP or install a version of Linux that was designed for netbooks.

Already having too many Windows boxes on my netowrk, I decided to make an attempt to install Linux. On this path, I discovered that there were several versions of Linux that one could choose from. After reading various reviews, I decided that I would try Easy Peasy, formerly Eee PC Linux, which was designed specifically for Eee PC netbooks.

It didn't take that long to install the new OS on the device. Backing up my data actually took longer than the installation process. All in all, Easy Peasy has given my netbook a second chance at life. It is amazingly usable now and I'm am surprised at how stable it is. For the most part, this post was completely composed on it and that included picture processing.

So here's a pic of my older netbook running Easy Peasy

320GB USB External Hard Drive for my Eee PC
Friday, August 29, 2008

Concerned that I would eventually run out of hard drive space on my Asus Eee PC 901XP, I decided to get a usb hard drive. Of all the drives out there, I went with the Western Digital My Passport Essential 320GB USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive.

I have used the Passport before and I like its compact size and high-capacity. It's powered through the usb port, so you don't have to carry an AC adaptor to use it.

The WD My Passport drives comes in various colors. I chose Arctic White to match my Eee PC.

Yeah, I can be very vain with my computers.

Apple Bluetooth Mouse by Rocketfish
Saturday, August 23, 2008

I wanted to free up the usb ports on my Asus Eee PC 901XP, so I decided to go shopping for a bluetooth mouse.

There wasn't much to choose from at the local BestBuy and neither Circuit City and Walmart carried any bluetooth mice locally in their stores. All of the bluetooth mice at BestBuy were about the same price of $50, give or take a dollar and a couple of pennies. Among the selections were some offerings from Microsoft, Targus, Apple, and Rocketfish.

After considering form factor, style, and price, I decided to go with the Rocketfish Apple Bluetooth Mouse. It was the cheapest of the bunch coming in at $47 plus the white color of the mouse matches the Eee PC. Despite being designed to be used with Mac products, the standard HID bluetooth protocls made this mouse work seamlessly with my system.

Now, I have more open usb ports to plug my flash drives into. For anyone who owns an Eee PC, having free usb ports is a blessing if you're one who has started to run out of hard drive space.

iGo Stowaway works with EEE PC
Saturday, August 16, 2008

During my little trek out of town, I spotted the iGo Stowaway bluetooth keyboard for $39.99 at the Tuesday Morning in Mobile. So far, this portable keyboard is working well with my new EEE PC. This keyboard is a lot more comfortable to use when typing something lengthy. The only drawback is the fact that you'll be carry one more thing around in your pack which somewhat diminishes the portability of the EEE.

My Eee PC is Delayed
Thursday, July 24, 2008

So, I ordered my Eee PC last Tuesday from Amazon.com because I figured that I could save with them by getting free shipping and having no tax charged to me. Now, I think I would have rather paid a little more than be in this not-so amusing nightmare.

I check my email and find out that my order has been delayed because my credit card was declined. So, I go and check the credit card information on Amazon and discover that I had not updated my credit card with the new expiration date. I then quickly fix this and try contact Amazon to retry to charge my card.

In a little while, I get a message that says that my card refuses the charge. Apparently, my Amazon.com card considered Amazon's tries as attempts of fraudulent use. My Amazon.com credit card now doesn't want to take any orders from me at Amazon.com.

After three days of waiting for Amazon.com and Amazon.com credit card (Chase) to resolve the issue, I decided to cancel my order and use a different credit card. I won't get any points for my order and I'll be getting the bloody thing a lot later than I planned.
