Meet the Tweebots

I’m not prone to writing about cute things, but when I accidentally stumbled up on www.tweenbots.com I decided to break my rule this once. Besides, it’s also about robots and humanity; topics that are both close to my heart.

What are Tweenbots? They are part of the Kacie Kinzer's thesis at ITP in New York which aims to answer the following question:
“. . .could a human-like object traverse sidewalks and streets along with us, and in so doing, create a narrative about our relationship to space and our willingness to interact with what we find in it? More importantly, how could our actions be seen within a larger context of human connection that emerges from the complexity of the city itself?”
To answer that question, she built robots! These robots were named “tweenbots.” Kinzer defines “tweenbots” as:
". . .human-dependent robots that navigate the city with the help of pedestrians they encounter. Rolling at a constant speed, in a straight line, Tweenbots have a destination displayed on a flag, and rely on people they meet to read this flag and to aim them in the right direction to reach their goal."
Personally, I think it’s a great project. It demonstrates the propensity of good people to be helpful, and shows how can empathize with someone (or some thing) that is lost or trying to find its way back home. Real decent people will always want to help out someone who is in need. It also doesn’t hurt to have that cheerful happy face.

Sunday Fun
Sunday, May 18, 2008

Well, it's another Sunday and we all know what that partly means: Laundry Day. It's a good thing too. The scent of cigarette smoke is lingering on the clothes I wore last night. So, I'll be doing this for a good part of the day.

I woke up this morning wanting tacos and I've decided that I'll be "running for the border" sometime today. Maybe after I'm done with laundry, I'll go to TacoBell and drive around town for a bit. This will give me an another excuse to listen to my music in my Ipod-powere car. I just have to remember not to be driving around for too long since the price of gasoline has making my wallet cry for a while now.

I don't have any tech calls this weekend so I'm relatively free to do what I want. So far, it's been a good weekend for me. I really believe that in order to keep yourself sane that you sometimes have to take some time to let go of all your problems and have a good time.

Blogging in the Park
Saturday, May 10, 2008

I managed to snag a WiFi signal at the Bayview Park, so I'm taking the opportunity to post something (anything!) while I'm here.

I'm not really sure what is happening here at the park, but it looks like there's some kind of gathering. I'm guessing it's some church group having a weekend picnic. Most likely they are having some kind of Mother's day picnic.

As for me, I'm out and about running errands and fixing computers again. I'm begining to think that all the owners of the computers that I've had to clean this week may know each other. Most of them had the same kind of infection. They probably spread the damn thing through email.

All I can say to people is to make sure that you update your antivirus program daily at the minimum and keep your firewall running. If you turn them off for any reason, then try to remember to turn them back on. It only takes one infection to ruin your computer and your day.
